Jay Smith

Delaware County, Pennsylvania

A Navy veteran, Smith was fired along with roughly 7,000 other employees of the Internal Revenue Service during the first month of the Trump administration. He had worked for the IRS’s Taxpayer Advocacy Service, helping people complete their returns and figure out how much they had to pay.

“I loved doing that job – I loved helping out,” Smith told a reporter for NBC local news in Philadelphia. “You know, The Taxpayer Advocacy service is already undermanned as it is. The case advocates are averaging over 120 cases per person, and you’re letting everybody go. “How does that help the taxpayer?”

Smith fell silent when reporter Lauren Mayk asked if he had voted for Donald Trump. Eventually he answered: “Honestly, uh, yeah, I did…. cause he talked a lot about taking care of the military, taking care of the veterans, taking care of the people that put him in office…”
